TAMING THE WILD Y
a workshop with Laura Nownes
The oversized traditional Tumbling Blocks and the Star of Bethlehem quilt are the perfect patterns to learn how to master the often-avoided technique called Y-seam construction. Laura has several helpful hints and techniques to assist in making this class a fun and successful quiltmaking experience.
Student Supply List:
Pattern Options:
1. The Big Tumble – a pattern by From Me to You by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes –Please bring your copy to class. (It is often available at your local quilt shop on online at my website at www.dianaandlaura.com). I will have some available for sale in class.
Fabric: Refer to the back of the pattern for exact amounts. Helpful Hints for Selecting Fabric: The traditional tumbling block design has three color sections: light, medium and dark; and the placement doesn’t vary. You will notice in my sample that I was not a purist with regard to the placement of the fabrics. The lights, mediums and darks shift around, producing an overall blended look. The individual “blocks” are not always well-defined. Be sure to have enough variety of each (lights, mediums & darks). A variety of small, medium and large-scale prints add interest. We will discuss in class whether you want high definition or a blended look.
Fabric Requirements: Finished quilt size is 72” x 82”
Note: Fat quarters work well for this quilt.
Lights: Thirteen ¼ yard pieces
Mediums: Eleven ¼ yard pieces
Darks: Eleven ¼ yard pieces
Cutting: please cut before coming to class.
Cut all of your fabric into 3-1/2” wide strips. If you are using a traditional ¼ yard piece (approx. 42” long), please cut the strips in half to make 21” lengths.
