While taking a road trip with her family from California to New York, a stop in Salt Lake City, UT provided inspiration that would later change her life. The beautiful quilts hanging in the windows of the Mormon Handicraft shops inspired her to take her first quilting class when returning to her native California. After taking her first sampler quilt class in Berkeley in 1979 she knew she had found a lifelong interest. Shortly after the class ended, she learned of a new quilt shop opening closer to her home. Little did she know that walking through the doors of the Empty Spools quilt shop in Alamo, CA would open many doors in her quiltmaking career. Her connection with the co-owner Diana McClun in 1980 allowed her to take many classes.  Laura shared her talents with students in the classroom, becoming one of the shop's leading beginning quilting teachers.  Diana and Laura's friendship which has led to the creation of five landmark quiltmaking books and a text for beginning and intermediate quiltmaking.

In 1986 while Laura was on maternity leave with her first daughter, Diana approached her about co-authoring a beginning how-to book. The book was intended to be used just in the shop. However, it was chosen by local publisher Michael Kile of The Quilt Digest Press. Shortly thereafter Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! was born. The huge, immediate success of this book encouraged Diana and Laura to continue writing.

The pair has worked together on television programs, with study groups and in seminars touching thousands of students, giving them a start in the basics of quiltmaking. They founded Teacher Development Seminars as a result of their commitment to the continuing education of quiltmaking. For seven years they facilitated the annual C & T Publishing Teachers Retreat,  another avenue for training those interested in learning the skills of teaching and quiltmaking, with classes taught by well-known quilting authors. Laura also facilitated the first Artist's Way for Quilters Retreat which was based on the book by Julia Cameron.

Laura is the co-author of the best-selling pattern company, "From Me to You", with over 60 original designs. Similar to their books, the patterns are presented in a booklet format with easy to follow instructions and color diagrams.

Laura was nominated twice for the Teacher of the Year Award by the The Professional Quilter Magazine. She teaches approximately 5 classes per week at local shops in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as lecturing and teaching workshops at various quilt guilds.

She has made several appearances on Simply Quilts, The Carol Duvall Show and most recently The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Timms.

Laura's passion for making quilts is an extension of her love of sewing.  From an early age, she began with doll clothes, and progressed to making her own garments, and often working on projects for neighbors.  Her early involvement in 4-H provided her first teaching experience to younger members.
